What is Myofascial Release Therapy?
And other FAQs
I don’t know if anyone ever told you that it’s possible to get out of pain.
If you’re here, chances are you’ve already tried a few things to relieve your pain:
- You’ve been told to “stretch more,” but the pain keeps coming back.
- Pain meds or injections may have dulled the ache temporarily, but the results didn’t last.
- You’ve spent time in physical therapy, repeating exercises while feeling like just another number.
- You may have even gone through surgery, only to find yourself still searching for relief.
- You might believe that you need to live with your limitations.
If this sounds like your story, I’m so glad you’re here.
I don’t know if anyone ever told you that it’s possible to get out of pain. You don’t have to live with it even if it’s been so long you can’t remember what normal or pain-free feels like.
Myofascial Release is powerful. I have helped countless clients continue to live pain free because of this type of treatment.
What is Myofascial Release ( MFR) ?
Unlike other modalities, MFR seeks to understand where your pain is while looking elsewhere for the cause of your pain.
Because of this we don’t spend hours and hours rubbing the painful spot, we zoom out and consider your entire body to finally uncover the source of your pain., The actual problem issometimes far away from where your pain is showing up.
Take my client, Sally. She came to me with persistent plantar fasciitis and she wanted to avoid surgery.
But when I evaluated her, I noticed an imbalance in her hips. Instead of just working on her foot, we released tight fascia in her abdomen, hips and legs, bringing her hips back into alignment. As we did, her foot pain disappeared. The real cause of her pain wasn’t in her foot at all- it was in her hips.
Fascia is your body’s protective webbing. It acts much like a seatbelt or safety system in your body.
When there is impact from falling or the chance that you can be injured or you experience stress your fascia, tightens down at up to 10,000lbs per sq inch which is great and effective protection (like a seatbelt in an accident) it keeps all of your guts from escaping so thank you fascia, BUT after the initial protection of the fascia was damaged or didn’t get the message that it’s ok to let go now, it can stay tight and crush pain sensitive structures anywhere in the body.
Because fascia has largely been under-studied, and even discarded by researchers and medical professionals, and doesn’t show up on the tests that are available , traditional therapies do not address the re-hydration and letting go process that MFR does.
Myofascial release changes that. We apply constant pressure with a sheer to help rehydrate fascial tissues which will allow it to let go of the crushing pressure grip on your pain sensitive structures. Doing so frees your body from tension and pain at the source.
How is this different/similar to physical therapy or massage?
MFR doesn’t rely on pushing, needing and forcing different stretches to your pain areas or aggressive techniques unlike other modalities. Instead, it works with your body, not against it.
Fascia doesn’t tighten for no reason- it’s protecting you. It’s doing its job by staying tight because it didn’t get the message to let it go. It’s staying tight to protect or keep you safe and at the same time it’s creating a problem because you are no longer in that old injury or stressful situation or you don’t need it to be that tight to help you with your repetitive activities.
While deep pressures or aggressive techniques might feel good in the moment- like something is being done to fix your problem. The relief is temporary.
Like when you tug quickly on your seatbelt and it tightens back up. It’s when you pull it slowly and gently that it will release its grip.
The results of working with your body this way. A deeper, lasting release that doesn’t rebound into more tightness and pain.
MFR also doesn’t rely on cookie- cutter treatments- unlike other modalities.
No two sessions are the same because no two bodies are the same. Your fascia is all over your body and will tighten down and hold its grip in specific areas based off your life experiences- falls, injuries, or a chance that you could be injured, repetitive motion, stressful situations.
If you have neck pain like my client Nancy, the cause of your pain may be completely different- even if it feels the same. Pain is the symptom, not the root problem. Your fascia responds to your unique life experiences, injuries, posture, and stress. That means tightness and restrictions causing your neck pain might be in a completely different area of your body than Nancy’s.
Because of this we don’t spend session after session doing the same thing over and over, following a protocol or chasing a symptom. We look at the whole body to find and treat the actual source of your pain, so you can experience real, lasting relief.
What happens during a treatment?
The best and quickest way to rehydrate tight fascia so it releases its crushing pressure on your pain sensitive structures is to first assess and identify where your unique tight fascial restrictions are then use hands on ( manuall) Myofascial release techniques to rehydrate the tissue.
Rather than chasing symptoms or focusing on where the pain is showing up, we take a whole body approach. By finding and treating the actual source of the pain- sometimes far from where you feel discomfort.
Each session is individualized to what your body needs at the moment, helping you move better, feel better, and finally break free from pain.
Your role is simple: relax, tune in to your body, and share any feedback as needed. In our sessions, we’ll work together. You have the opportunity to be an active participant in your own healing.
How soon will I notice relief?
If you’re here, you’ve probably tried everything for your pain-and maybe you’re feeling frustrated, just wanting it to go away.
I know we all want a quick fix!
It’s happened, but it’s not the norm to see lasting results from a problem that’s been there for 10 years after a one hour session.
Your symptoms may reduce after a session or two or it may take longer for you to notice real change..
If it takes 6 treatments or 60 treatments will it be worth it to feel better?
If you were pain free and living the active life you’ve been hoping for would you regret how long it took or how many treatments you had?
Probably not.
It’s important now because you’ve most likely tried a lot of different modalities.
You might feel relief immediately or changes that last a few hours to a couple of days, or in some cases, you feel worse before you feel better. Most of the time, pain didn’t happen overnight and long lasting healing often takes time.
Pain doesn’t happen overnight, and true, lasting healing can take time; however, it’s possible to notice changes or significant improvement within 6 to 8 sessions, sometimes sooner than you think and sometimes it’s longer than you want.
Healing is a journey, but there’s a pot of gold at the end- living pain-free and active again.
Keep going, and you’re on the right path.
“The treatment LASTED.. I’ve never had back pain like that again.”
“I had a very profound, almost miraculous experience working with Jessica to treat my lower back and hip pain.
I’m a stay-at-home mom and the pain I had been experiencing in my back and hips was so intense that I had a difficult time carrying my (heavy) toddler up and down the stairs in our house, or holding him for any amount of time. I had tried everything else – chiropractic, acupuncture, PT, and these all delivered some temporary relief, but the pain would just come back.
MFR was 100% worth the time and money!! In just 5 sessions, my pain is now down like a 2-3 (from an 8) and I have a much bigger range of pain-free motion. It’s incredible.
The biggest shift, though, was in my emotional life. I often spontaneously cried during treatments, and found that lots of old memories and traumas surfaced and were released. I also realized I’d been hiding my true self and hadn’t been letting myself be “seen” for who I truly am in several areas of my life. I took some huge steps in my personal life after being free of this emotional pain, and I now have a clearer vision of the work I want to do in the world (another area where I had been stuck prior to MFR).
I had no idea about the role the fascia plays in the body before meeting Jessica and learning from her – and honestly, the results from the treatments speak for themselves.
Releasing my fascia was absolutely the key to my physical and emotional healing.” -Annie M.
Update from Annie years later..
I got MFR when my first was little and I could barely carry him. I was in so much pain! The work I did with Jessica healed me and I have never had back pain again! I have been able to STILL wear kid #2 – and he’s a 30 lb almost-3 year old now! It’s funny reading this review again after several years – I would write it all again today! And I would add that the treatment LASTED – as I said I’ve never had back pain like that again. I recommend it to everyone I know who is in pain!!
-Annie M. Mom of two boys
Can you help with my pain areas or condition?
I’ve successfully treated a wide range of pain and injuries related to muscles, joints, and nerves – everything from headaches and migraines to shoulder, back, hip, knee and ankle pain by -focusing on the fascia and using myofascial release therapy.
Fascia, your body’s connective tissue, plays an important role in nearly every function and system in your body. When it becomes tight or restricted due to injury, stress, surgery, or poor posture, it can lead to pain and limit movement.
I use a whole- body approach to get to the root cause of your pain, not just treat your symptoms.
Many of my clients have been diagnosed with:
• Pain or unexplained pain
• Back, neck, shoulder, hip, knee, foot or ankle pain and plantar fasciitis
• Sciatica, nerve pain or disc problems
• Post-surgerical tightness, including C-sections, joint replacements, or scar tissue restrictions. Breast cancer tightness and pain and radiation tightness from cancer treatment
• Headaches and migraines
• Mobility issues and stiffness
• Postural problems: Pain or discomfort caused by prolonged desk work, slouching, or poor alignment
• Fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome:
• Stress, tension, and trauma- related pain: Helping to release stored emotional and physical trauma in the body
If your pain doesn’t require surgery, I can help.
Many clients have been able to avoid surgery or reduce their need for medication or injections after myofascial release.
Is Myofascial Release contraindicated with my issues?
Because MFR is a safe and gentle therapy it can be adapted to help a variety of conditions and symptoms.
It’s so gentle that I’ve worked with ages from 0-100 years.
However, there are some situations where MFR is not recommended directly on an area that is fractured, has an open wound or burns until they have healed. Treatment is recommended 6 weeks post injury.
And an absolute contraindication if there is an active infection, or certain medical conditions like severe osteoporosis, aneurysm, deep vein thrombosis and recent surgeries.
“I’m able to walk, move and sleep more easily.”
“I have had muscle tightness and pain off and on for over 20 years in my lower back, legs and shoulders. I have found some relief from regular massage, yoga and chiropractor adjustments and yet still found myself going back to pain patterns.
This fall I had sciatica symptoms for over a month which prevented me from moving freely, sleeping and regular exercise.
My massage therapist recommended I try Myofascial Release Therapy which lead me to Jessica at North Shore Myofascial.
When I met Jessica and then heard about her comprehensive plans, I immediately signed up without hesitation! I shared my goals and intentions for releasing the pain she assured me that they would be addressed and I would experience relief, shifts and learn self-care (treatment at home) during the program.
After one session, I immediately experienced results. First learning the technique of unwinding and about the body’s natural ability to “melt” muscle (fascia) contractions. Also with Jessica’s support, when I “let go” and allow my body to move without thinking about it, it will guide her and me to where I have (pain) holding patterns that would be beneficial to release. Most of my pain has lessened and released out of my body. I am able to walk, move and sleep more easily. I also know how to incorporate myofascial release, unwinding and rebounding into my daily life.
Jessica has been an amazing practitioner and facilitator in my Myofascial Release Therapy process over the last three months. Her treatment plan is so comprehensive that I feel all of my goals, questions, pain management and more have been met! In fact I am looking forward to signing up for another round!
Working with Jessica has been priceless. The best time and money I have spent after so many years of massage and chiropractor appointments, pain relief ointments, energy healing, therapy and other treatments etc.
I have learned a lot from Jessica to support me beyond our sessions and the results are measurable and lasting. I have released old pain patterns, identified past traumas and shifted unsupportive beliefs that were trapped in my body.
And best of all I have more energy and the pain is melting away!

I’m nervous to get MFR because I heard that it hurts.. does it hurt?
It’s natural and normal to feel nervous, especially if you’ve heard that MFR can be intense and hurt.
The truth is, there are many forms of MFR and this form is gentle. The way I work is not about forcing or causing unnecessary pain but to be gentle and allow your body to make the changes it needs to make to help you out of pain.
During a session, you might feel sensations like pressure, stretching or a “hurts-so-good” feeling. Some areas are more tender than others, especially if there’s been a lot of tension there, but the process is gentle and within your comfort level.
I’ll work closely with you, checking in to see if you feel safe and supported throughout the session.
It can be deeply relieving like finally scratching an itch that’s been needing to be scratched.
You can feel your body relax in a way that feels like it has for the first time.
What if I’ve tried everything else and nothing worked?
I know what it’s like to try everything for years, trying everything from physical therapy to chiropractors to different stretches and get temporary relief.
MFR is unique and different. It’s not like anything else that you’ve tried before. It’s the missing piece.
Most other therapies focus on treating symptoms, not the root cause. MFR addresses your fascia which is often overlooked in traditional approaches. 90 % of musculoskeletal pain is due to myofascial restrictions and unfortunately go undiagnosed and untreated.
These fascia focused treatments typically resolve pain faster than other clinics.
Even if you’ve tried everything- MFR could be your solution.
“I’m able to run around with my kids in the yard without giving my hip a second thought.”
“ For years, I struggled with chronic left hip and lower back discomfort, as well as TMJ-related headaches.
Despite my background as a movement specialist and my efforts with physical therapy, massage, and daily therapeutic exercises, I wasn’t finding lasting relief.
Since starting MFR treatments with Jessica, the change has been nothing short of remarkable. Before, even running or playing with my kids caused discomfort and a slight limp on my left side.
Now, I’m able to run around with them in the yard without giving my hip a second thought. The increased freedom of movement and reduction in muscle tension has made a huge impact in my work as well—teaching my clients is now much more comfortable, and I can demonstrate exercises with greater ease and precision.
What truly sets Jessica apart as a therapist is her intuitive, gracious, and compassionate nature.
She has an extraordinary understanding of the holistic connection of the body, and her approach is not only deeply skilled but also incredibly empathetic.
Initially, I thought MFR would be similar to a regular massage, something pleasant but short-lived. However, after just one session with Jessica, I was amazed at how light and free my hip felt. I walked in with significant discomfort and left feeling buoyant, mobile, and fully at ease.
What also stood out to me was the mind-body connection that Jessica fostered throughout the treatments. Not only did she help release years of physical restrictions in my body, but through her compassionate work, I was able to uncover emotional blockages that had been holding me back from fully pursuing my personal goals.
MFR with Jessica has transformed the way I feel both physically and emotionally, and I’m incredibly grateful for the ongoing progress. If you’re considering MFR therapy, I highly recommend giving it a try—you won’t regret it!”

How much does treatment cost?
All Myofascial Release treatment sessions are one-on-one and 60 minutes long, priced at $250 per session.
Unlike other treatments where your time is divided or rushed, I work with you for the full session, focusing on hands-on, individualized care.
Each session is designed around how you’re feeling that day and minute by minute, so that your treatment evolves with your progress rather than repeating the same routine.
This approach helps you get better faster with results that last longer.
Your first session is a New Client Evaluation. During this 60-minute session:
- We’ll start with a conversation about your pain, symptoms, and goals for your life.
- I’ll take my time to listen and understand what’s not working for you and what you want to be doing without pain.
- A postural assessment will help identify restrictions contributing to your discomfort.
- You’ll receive an MFR treatment targeting your pain areas.
- We’ll end with a customized treatment plan, giving you a clear understanding of what’s happening in your body and how we can work together to resolve your pain.
This evaluation session allows you to feel confident about moving forward and gives us the foundation to work toward your active, pain-free life.
I’m 100% committed to helping you reach your goals and get back to doing the things you love.
How many sessions will I need?
While it’s possible you WILL notice relief and results from as soon as your first session, the most impactful way to experience the full benefits of MFR is through consistent treatment.
You will have noticeable changes or significant improvements occur within 6 to 8 treatments.
While pain and symptoms may subside during the process, our work doesn’t stop there.
The goal is to get you pain- free and active. So it’s important to address the root cause of your pain so you’re less likely to experience similar issues in the future.
What does the treatment process look like?
My number one goal is to help you reduce or eliminate pain and discomfort so you can travel, exercise, walk, garden, and enjoy your friends and family without worry.
Once your pain is under control, my goal is to find the root cause underlying pain and correct it.
Then help make your body more flexible and more resilient so that there is a much less likely chance of this occurring again into the future.
You’ll learn self-treatment techniques with simple tools such as a small ball, foam roller and self myofascial movement.
You can continue your healing at home so you can feel this level of pain free for the long term.
You’ll also know how to keep your fascia healthy and stay active as you age.
The closer together your treatments, the better your results. Treatments are typically recommended 1–2 times a week for 4–6 weeks, followed by a re-evaluation to go over your next steps. I’ll be able to provide more of an accurate estimate after your first visit.
Once your goals are met, you might want to challenge yourself to become even more active as you get stronger and more confident to hike, bike or do your favorite active again pain- free
MFR is about long-term healing, not just temporary relief. It’s a journey and with MFR the results are permanent.
How much time will you spend with me during my treatment or how long is each session?
Unlike doctors or physical therapists who may only spend 15 minutes with you, I dedicate a full 60 minutes to each session.
This focused, one-on-one time allows us to dive deep into your body’s unique needs, address multiple layers of tension, and make significant progress in just one session.
Imagine what we can accomplish in an hour compared to the rushed appointments you may be used to.
With this dedicated time, you’ll experience faster results and a deeper sense of relief.
Every minute is tailored to helping you feel better and move closer to living pain-free.
What is your cancellation policy?
I require a 48 hour notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. This allows me to offer your spot to another client who may be waiting for treatment.
If you have an appointment and need to move it or something comes up, let us know within the 48 hour window and we’ll gladly reschedule you to another time. Life happens.
If you can’t reschedule at the time, you’ll have a credit on your account for a year from the cancellation date. So you can come back in when you’re ready for treatment.
Missed or no shows for appointment is 100% charge for your session
How are payments accepted?
All payments are prepaid at the time of scheduling to secure your appointment.
I accept:
•Credit and debit cards
•FSA (Flexible Spending Account) and HSA (Health Savings Account) payments
This creates a seamless check-in process, so you can focus fully on your treatment and healing.
Is your office accessible for people with mobility issues?
My office is located in my home, which unfortunately requires going up a set of stairs to enter. At this time, there is no alternate entry without stairs.
I understand that this may create a challenge for those with mobility concerns. If you’re unable to navigate stairs but are interested in Myofascial Release, please reach out to me directly. I’d be happy to discuss potential alternatives or provide recommendations to ensure you can get the care you need.
What happens when I click the ‘Schedule Here’ button?
Clicking the ‘Schedule Here’ button will take you to my scheduling page, where you can choose a day and time that works best for you. Once you book your first session, you’ll receive a confirmation email with all the details you need to prepare.
From there, I’ll see you at your evaluation session, where we’ll begin your journey to living pain- free and active-together!
